It sounds easy at first glance, but when it comes to the moment you need to add a banner or tool to your income, it turns out that you either need a specific type for the type of content created or a certain size, etc. .
In this article, we will share with you our SEMrush experience on how to use promotional materials to achieve the best possible result.
First of all, you will find pre-designed materials in most affiliate programs, which is good for you whether you are starting your affiliate journey or are considered an affiliate marketing guru. In the SEMrush Affiliate Program, you can find the Promotions section of your profile under "Promotions".
Usually, you will find many links, banners and various tools for your needs. At this point, you may find yourself looking around and wondering which of these promotions to use. Therefore, our recommendation will be to develop a business plan to add any promotional material to your site to ensure that you do not miss any important items.
For this purpose, we created an easy-to-follow checklist to get to know the process well.
Choose the topic you will cover and ensure that the promotional material supports it.
If you are creating or updating a piece of content, you may do so for a specific topic. So it would make sense to add all the promotional material related to your topic, right? For example, if you cover "SEMrush Backlink Audit", it would be a good idea to add the landing page, tool, and related banner.
Or, you might want to run a PPC campaign, which is a great way to earn affiliate income. But even in this case, you have clear messages and a clear topic. Therefore, determining the type of banner and its reflective positioning is crucial.
Determine the banner color, size, language and goal.
Try adding a banner and widget in a color scheme that is similar in design to your website design, so that it looks consistent and organic to your website.
Choosing a goal type can also increase your conversion rate. Try to choose the target "New Tab", so the view will open in a new tab or window. This can help you get your reader back to your site if they're not interested in the show.
Where do you want to place the banner exactly? Adding the right banner size can increase your chances of attracting potential customers. Make sure your reference ID is inside the banner / widget / link icon.
Linking promotional materials to a unique reference ID is the key to affiliate marketing sales. Without your reference ID within any of your links, you will not be able to receive any result from our promotional activities. Therefore, it is extremely important to make sure everything is OK with your link, especially in the reference ID part.
How can you check the functioning of your code?
First, make sure you have a part? ref = 1234567891, where “1234567891” is your unique reference ID. You can always check your reference ID in your BeRush profile under the "Personal Information" section. The Referral Code part identifies your unique reference ID.
Secondly, you can always check the link’s functionality by opening the link in incognito mode. Make sure to close all incognito windows that were previously opened. After opening the link in the new incognito window, you will find a new visit on the statistics page.
Last but not least, one way to check the affiliate link well is to open a new incognito window in Chrome. It's not the easiest way, but if you want to check well, it's one of the options to do that. So, paste your recoded link into an incognito window. You will then have to right-click on the window and choose "Scan." A new item will open in the same window. At the top of the item, choose "Apply" and open it. In the left menu, under "Storage", click on "Cookies" and choose the "SEMrush" link. You will then see a lot of icons and other things on the right side of the item. But don't worry, we're almost done. You now need to find the "ref_code" attribute under "Name" and ensure it is your reference code. Again, you can check your reference ID in the BeRush profile.
Now you are ready to add any affiliate links to your supplier.
Take a closer look at the content of the promotional materials
One of the best ways to use your passive income effortlessly is to use pre-designed promotional materials because everything is designed for you. All you have to do is use the appropriate messaging and size and make sure your link is working.
If we take a closer look at what your link should contain, we will discover that there is good reasoning behind the content elements that should be on the affiliate landing page, banner, or gadget.
First of all, it is best to choose a banner and link group with a clear CTA button message. Why is this important? Well, the CTA affects the conversion rate.
So, no matter what kind of promotional material you will choose, you should always try to include a CTA button inside it.
The second significant requirement is to be up to date and in line with global trends. What does that mean? Well, simply test an animated banner on your website instead of a static one, choose promo material with a modern design and up-to-date info, and you’re good to go!
Testing, testing, testing. It is never enough to test how your banners, links, and widget work. If you have an opportunity to A / B test your affiliate promo materials, you really should do so. With the help of the A / B test, you can determine where to place each type of ad and how much of the budget to allocate if you use any paid channels. Besides, through testing, you can learn what is trending and what is relevant for your audience, making use of the content in the ad to obtain this information.
What options are available in the SEMrush Affiliate Program?
The SEMrush Affiliate Program offers you various banners, landing pages, links, eBooks, and campaigns.
You can find it all in the “Promo materials” section with your affiliate Ref ID already included for each link.
You can find all “Links”, aka landing pages and links to the SEMrush products, toolkits and other internal resources such as Academy, Blog, and Knowledge Base, in the first window. Each of the links has a preview, name, and, most importantly, the tag. Tags can help you to initially identify the resource and function of a specific link.
In the screenshot above, you can see several link previews and tags right under the image. Taking a closer look at the first link, we can see that it has a “Trials” tag, which means that this link is a landing page with a 7-day trial. We can see the same with the “Backlink Management Multi-Tool” landing page.
Another type of tag is “Toolkit”, which is used for links to a specific SEMrush toolkit, for example, in the screenshot above we can see the “Advertising Toolkit” link. This type of link does not provide users with any trial they can activate. However, if you create a piece on the Advertising toolkit or on one of its tools, and you want your audience to directly go and check out the product, you can use this link. Your Ref ID will automatically be included in the link, so once a new user opens this link he / she will be assigned your Ref ID.
One more type of link is that tagged as “General”. The “General” tag identifies a link that leads to an internal SEMrush resource such as the Academy or the Blog. You can also use this type of link to provide your audience with useful SEMrush information, posts and more.
The “banners” page is one more option in the promo materials provided by the SEMrush Affiliate Program. This section is full of various types of banners in different languages, sizes and colors. It is you who decides which of the banner sets is more suitable for your resource, although our recommendation is to always check for the banners with limited promo time, such as the “Competitive Intelligence” one in the screenshot above. This sort of banner is exclusive and usually has a specific duration, so you should always take advantage of that.
As with the “Links”, your Ref ID is included in each of the banner sets. Simply copy the code and you’re all set!
The eBooks option is a great way to provide your audience with relevant and data-driven resources. This type of promo material could be especially useful and interesting for the agency's audience. And since we now have 9 eBooks available covering different industries, you can always experiment with promoting such a piece of content. One of the possible ways of promoting an eBook is to “backlink” on the content from one of the research.
Apparently, SEMrush widgets are one of the highest converting tools for our affiliates. When you add a widget to your website and place it inside your piece of content, you can really benefit from this type of promo material. But be careful not to use it if it’s irrelevant to your topic.
Time-limited campaigns are those that we’re sharing with you for a certain amount of time in order to be in line with SEMrush’s promotional activities. You can easily benefit from using banners, landing pages, and widgets of time-limited campaigns as these are the highest-converting, the latest, and the most hyped ones.
Evergreen campaigns are those campaigns that include all promo sets for a specific SEMrush tool or toolkit. It’s easier to use evergreen campaigns in cases where you write a piece on a particular tool or toolkit and you would like to have a chance to include all banners, links, and widgets on the tool or toolkit. Therefore, evergreen campaigns can be considered as “bundles”.

Well, it’s up to you which promo materials to use as only you know your audience well enough to decide on it. However, we would recommend you check for the time-limited promo materials and not miss the chance of taking advantage of using them in your promotional activities.
